Aug 14, 2017 Plaquenil is the brand name of hydroxychloroquine, a drug used to prevent or treat malaria 2. Plaquenil is also used for long-term treatment of autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis RA and systemic lupus erythmatosis. According to the Mayo Clinic, it can take up to six months' constant use before an effect is seen in RA 1. Plaquenil can cause serious side effects when used in high doses for chronic diseases such as RA over the long term. Patients need prescription drugs like pilocarpine Salagen or cevimuline Evoxac. Yeast infections can be treated with anti-fungal medicines, and patients with reflux may use drugs to reduce stomach acid, like proton-pump inhibitors or H2 blockers. Hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil is considered a disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug DMARD. It can decrease the pain and swelling of arthritis. It may prevent joint damage and reduce the risk of long-term disability. Hydroxychloroquine is in a class of medications that was first used to prevent and treat malaria. Rheumatoid factor is a protein in your body that attacks healthy tissue. A high rheumatoid factor is indicative of rheumatoid arthritis RA, a painful condition that causes stiff, swollen, painful joints and fatigue. I may be incorrect and someone please correct if I am, but I believe plaquenil is used for sjogrens and lupus primarily, but can be used in RA as well as other AI diseases It is often the "first line of defense" with sjogrens and lupus before the rheumys pull out the bigger guns like methotrexate and others.

Terrible Itching on Plaquenil---PLEASE HELP. Terrible Itching on Plaquenil---PLEASE HELP. My local rheumy feels that if it were related to Plaquenil that my whole body would be itching. However, a dermatologist friend strongly disagrees and said that a drug reaction can cause localized itching. The one thing that might help solve the problem is to stop the plaquenil. If you stop.
