    Plaquenil and taste buds

Prednisone can however cause oral thrush which would make your tongue feel furry, sore and white in color. You should see your doctor if your symptoms continue.https:// also have experienced a "terrible taste" (more metallic than anything) and it has changed the flavor of food. Not taking any other drugs so can't blame something else. I am on 50mg once a day for five days and I have experienced this effect since the first day of usage. Makes me want to eat something sweet all the time to get rid of it but I know that's the worst thing to do. I was on steroids for 3 weeks for systemic poison ivy and I developed the burned tongue feeling and metallic taste in my mouth.

You may start out with dryness or a metallic, burning taste in your mouth. Then you’ll see white patches on your tongue, cheeks, and gums. They can be tiny dots or lines that make a lace-like. Saliva also helps protect the mucosa and oral structures, including the taste buds. Finally, saliva helps carry food and flavors across the tongue and the taste buds where it can be tasted. Without adequate saliva, there are many ways that taste can suffer. Plaquenil is the brand name for the prescription drug hydroxychloroquine. It's used to treat and prevent malaria infection, and to reduce symptoms and progression of autoimmune diseases such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and others. Malaria is spread by mosquitoes.

I assumed it was carisoprodol (muscle relaxer) because I'm a retired nurse and don't recall patients on prednisone complaining of this. I looked my symptoms up on line and I found the condition called burning mouth syndrome which sounds like what I have been experienced. Unfortunately there isn't much that can be done about it. I just started taking prednisone and carisoprodol yesterday and was wondering which one was causing the strange taste sensation. 3 times a week and have had the horrible taste in my mouth since day one. I only hope that when I get off the prednisone that I get my sense of taste back. I have been off the steroids for 3 months and the symptoms have subsided some what but are still there and food doesn't taste the same.

  4. Many people with burning mouth have a loss of bitter taste buds at the tip of the tongue. So someone with normal taste for sweet, sour and salty has a reduced sensitivity for bitter taste. The theory is that taste inhibits pain, but when the ability to taste bitter is lost, pain fibers begin to "fire" spontaneously.
