Hydroxychloroquine is an antimalarial agent that has been used in systemic lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis treatment for many years. Recently, novel mechanisms of action have been proposed, thereby broadening the therapeutic perspective of this medication. Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic disorder for which there is no known cure. Fortunately in the last few years, a shift in strategy toward the earlier institution of disease modifying drugs and the availability of new classes of medications have greatly improved the outcomes that can be expected by most patients. Hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil and aminoquinoline mechanism of action Inhibits locomotion of neutrophils and chemotaxis of eosinophils; impairs complement dependent antigen-antibody reactions. Interferes with digestive vacuole function within sensitive malarial parasites by increasing the pH and interfering with lysosomal degradation of hemoglobin

And caution is required if patients have certain heart conditions, diabetes, psoriasis etc. It may have both an anti-spirochaete activity and an anti-inflammatory activity, similar to the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.

Chloroquine is a 9-aminoquinoline known since 1934. Apart from its well-known antimalarial effects, the drug has interesting biochemical properties that might be applied against some viral infections. Chloroquine exerts direct antiviral effects, inhibiting pH-dependent steps of the replication of several viruses including members of the flaviviruses, retroviruses, and coronaviruses. Its best. Small amounts of hydroxychloroquine can be found in breastmilk, but international experts indicate this medication is acceptable while breastfeeding. MECHANISM OF ACTION. Plaquenil increases the pH of lysosomes and impairs complement-dependent antigen-antibody reactions. It also inhibits the chemotaxis of eosinophils and locomotion of neutrophils. Mechanism of action The precise mechanism by which hydroxychloroquine exhibits activity against. Plasmodium. is not known. Hydroxychloroquine, like chloroquine, is a weak base and may exert its effect by concentrating in the acid vesicles of the parasite and by inhibiting polymerization of heme.

Sjogren's Syndrome Symptoms, Treatment & Prognosis I was diagnosed three years ago with Sjogren's syndrome by a rheumatologist. I have never been a person who took medication until now. My doctor put me on Plaquenil to maintain inflammation, Evoxac three times a day for dry mouth, and Restasis eye drops twice a day. The Restasis takes at least 6 weeks until you still start feeling the relief.
